Race was used by these countries in the years between 1946 and 1960 in an attempt to be superior in technology and justify their competing ideologies.
In order to achieve the goal of the paper, I have arranged it into four sections. In the first section, I have explained the historical context of Space Race. In the second section, I have discussed the people central to this competition. The third section discourses the significance of the Space Race to America. The impact of the Space Race is discussed in the fifth section. The paper concludes in the sixth section by presenting an overview of the discussion.
In the year1957, the Soviet Union launched the first man-made satellite (Staff, 2010). This development was not anticipated by the Americans who wanted to be the ones to be the ‘first” in every sphere of the world (Logsdon et al., 1995). The launch of the satellite also presented a threat to the United States because the Americans feared that the Soviets might use it to launch a nuclear weapon against her. Therefore, the US made a quick move of spying on the Soviet in a bid to collect enough intelligence information on the activities of the Soviet military (History, 2010).
A year after the Soviet had launched her satellite, the United States launched its competing satellite named Explorer I. The then president of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower, made a public order that established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA was tasked and fully funded to undertake everything that involves the exploration of the space. President Dwight also established the two additional federal agencies that would assist NASA execute its mandate effectively. One was the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the other was under the management of the U.S. Air force. This brought new ideas that created disillusionment to American people. The production of war pulled America out of a tremendously large depression; the women were left to replace the people who had gone to participate in the war. This changed the roles of women who had to stop staying at homes and go to work in order to sustain the American country.
