Download file to see previous pages We arrived before noon which was the beginning of visitation hours. Having had earlier arrangements with the museum staff, everything was in order and there was no trouble getting admission.
Outside the museum gates we found more cars packed, children and members of public preparing to be admitted inside the museum. From the look, the members of public were of different races. This was an indication that participants were from all over the world. The museum is a lavishly decorated home, well furnished and maintained with good exterior architecture. We later understood that the home was built by a Cortland industrialist known as Chester Wickwire. It had been used since then by Chester’s descendants until 1973. At the entrance one would not miss the museum heading with the three terms: tours, exhibitions and research, written beneath it. With the support of a tour guide, we were taken around the facility with many of us wearing faces filled with anxiety and the desire to learn more.
At the entrance of the home, there is a well carved stone with writings displaying the mission statement of the museum. The mission statement reads; ‘The 1890 House Museum aims to promote and showcase a cultural significance of this property to the public, it also seeks to collect, preserve, research, display and interpret objects that promote local and national history of American cultural heritage during the late 19th and early 20th century. The mission statement indicate how the museum could be a useful site for all members of public who want to learn more of American history and cultural heritage.
The 1890 House museum is a grand limestone mansion that is designed stylishly; it has lavish interior, well maintained grass lawns, and one could not resist playing on it.
