The Mona Lisa is has some level of generosity in its dimensions in that it includes the arms and hands which do not touch the frame. This painting depicts the subject in an upright and sideway posture on a chair with her face and chest slightly facing the viewer, which is a posture that is associated with the pyramid image that is used in describing the seated Madonna. The woman’s left hand sits comfortably on the chair’s armrest and is clutched by the opposite hand whose arm goes across her front (Earls 111). The somewhat protective position of her arms together with the armrest develops a perception of distance between the subject and the portrait’s viewer. The artist placed the woman’s hands at the anterior edge of the pyramid and he uses the same shade of lighting for the face, breasts and hands. He continues to use the armrest to develop a perception of distance between the person observing the painting and the painting itself. The subject’s face aligns with the folded arms defining her reserved mood; however, she also looks directly in the eye creating the illusion of communication. Some small details such as shadows and hair assisted the painting to be considered as a great piece of artwork, as the painter used a new technique in this painting. This new technique did not depend on the use of outlines and is evident at the corner of the mouth as well as the corner of the eyes. This painting was one of the first that were created with imaginary landscapes as the background as it contains icy mountains, meandering paths and a tiny bridge that demonstrates a lack of human presence. The curves in the subject’s hair and clothing ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
