Download file to see previous pages... It majorly focuses on the White soldiers’ oppression of their black counterparts and failures to acknowledge their remarkable achievements. Edgerton further puts finer details on how the blacks in the military struggled for significant recognition during those times when racial discrimination was at its peak.
For easy comprehension and chronological flow of ideas, the book is wonderfully organized into eight important chapters, each handling its portion of the captivating story. The first chapter ‘The Average Negro Is Naturally Cowardly’ documents how the blacks were perceived as inferior in all area of life (Edgerton 7). As such, they were regularly taken advantage of and utterly abused. At a particular point, the author even highlights how some rebels would stand on top of the hills during wars and call upon African soldiers to come to them. What would follow is a series of shots aimed at them resulting to multiple deaths in cold blood? In response, heartily cries would be heard from all over saying ‘No quarter! No quarter! Kill the niggers! Shoot them down!’ The second chapter is titled ‘The War to save humanity’ and continues with the blacks plights in the military at the time of wars. In a similar manner, it ridicules the treatment accorded to the black men in the military who had given out their lives and all that it takes to protect the sovereignty of their nation.
‘World War 1: Our country, Our War, the third chapter introduces us to the selfless African American soldiers participation in a war they took as their own. They actively took part amidst the condemnations, despair and challenges alongside their white counterparts. Inferior they still remained but that dint deter their efforts (Edgerton 45).
