The human beings appeal to the gods for intervention after the realization that King Gilgamesh, who was an offspring of a god and a human being was pushing them too hard. The gods see it proper to create someone who would rival King Gilgamesh’s might. The goddess of creation, Aruru then creates Enkidu, who is as might as Gilgamesh. Enkidu first lives in the wilderness with animals before a harlot is sent to entice him. This leads to his civilization which results in a relationship between him and Gilgamesh1. The goddess of love, Ishtar is attracted to Gilgamesh, but Gilgamesh declines to give in due to her previous relations. She goes to her father, god Anu, who unleashes a fearful bull of heaven to attack Gilgamesh. With the help of Enkidu, Gilgamesh is able to kill the bull. As a result of the death of this bull the gods decide that Enkidu should die. Gilgamesh is highly affected by Enkidu’s death.
There are a number of things that can be deduced from this story. For instance, you will notice that the community in question believed in the existence of many god. However, one thing that is not clear is the person who wrote the story. The sources of this poem were believed to have been done more than 2000 years ago. However, the earliest tablets containing the versions of this poem are believed to be already distinct. This makes it very challenging to find out the exact date when the poem was done. Its first discovery is believed to have taken place in the 1840s. There is a significant difference in the time when the event described in the poem took place and the time at which the poem was written.
Given the fact that most of the initial poems were found on stone tablets it is clearly evident that the poem was first written at a time when human beings depended on stone tablets as the main way of keeping records and history.
