Acheson joined FDR leadership as an undersecretary in the treasury department. As secretary of the U.S. defense department, he shaped the doctrine of Truman to support Turkey and Greece against the expansion of the Soviet. He further helped formulate what became marshal plan for inciting economic recovery in Europe. He was named the secretary by President S. Truman in 1949. He promoted NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization formation.1
He was always a controversial figure and lifelong democrat. He broke early deals policies of FDR when the president took the U.S. off the standard of gold. He returned when World War II outset and served in high ranks in the state department. At the beginning of the cold war, He took charge of the briefings of the white House congressional leaders on what became the doctrine of Truman. The legislators were not impressed with the urgent need to take Great Britain part in supporting Turkey and Greece. The secretary then painted a the Soviet Union, a stark picture poised at the meeting point of three continents that were ready in spreading from Mediterranean into Africa, westward into Europe, and toward middle East to the east. When he conclude his remarks, Arthur Vandenberg, Republican Senator, Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, said that he would support the plan if and only if it were presented to the Congress in those terms.2
Despite the high part in the containment policy, he became the center of critics of Truman foreign policy. Fed up with the critics, he described his antagonist as re-examiners.
