Download file to see previous pages... The first Matilda was Malcolm’s and Margaret’s daughter, both of whom had traces in Scotland. The Matilda was married to Henry I of England in the early twelfth century thus bequeathed to Henry, the heir of the influential Normans. The new status was a politically important connection to Alfred the Great, who was her forefather. Matilda’s life as queen exposes her outstanding talents. During her memorable moments, she banked on her sound education to offer leadership when her husband was absent2. The training enabled her to advance the culture of literacy of the twelfth century. Under her influence was an incredible demesne that enabled her to employ both religious and secular patronage. In the court system, she served as an active member of the administration, in charge of her husband’s cross-channel kingdom.
Chronicle philosophers of the medieval Europe usually refer to the queen as Mathilda bona regina or a ‘saint.’ Research indicates how Matilda realized the status, both because the medieval system of governance enabled her to exercise some power and because she individually was gifted at influencing those arrangements3.
The second Matildas was also an important member of Stephen’s rule. She took a place within her husbands ruling elite, and often served as vice regent when Stephen was away from office. Matilda was often in her husband’s entourage on his visits to various parts of England.
Owing to these important undertakings in the service of the people, Henry I ordered the construction of Westminster Palace for the queen. Her influence in the office enabled her to advance literary works, including memoirs of her kin, some of which were completed after her demise. Matilda’s office and status enabled her to maintain close correspondence with members of the clergy including Archbishop Anselm, and the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V among others4.
