Download file to see previous pages After the scandal, and once free to resume his life, Sickles was commissioned by U.S. Pres. Abraham Lincoln to form a regime to fight the union political elite. After that he became a political general in the army. He earned his reputation of a hard-fighting officer on May 31, 1862, during the so-called battle of the Fair Oaks in the Virginia Peninsula. He rose to the position of major general although he is not a professional soldier and a non-West Point graduate (Rice, Garry .Sept 23, 2008).
Although he did not agree with his supervisors, he displayed many soldierly qualities and fought fearlessly in combats. At Gettysburg, for instance, he did not like their position, and therefore he defied his superiors’ order which caused the destruction and disappearance of III Corps and the end of his command in the field because he lost his leg in the process.(Moates, Marian, 2003) Rice, Garry, assessed Sickles as a forceful and aggressive general, and as someone who did not like to take advice or consider other points of view. Because of his powerful friends in the army and in Washington, he was able to avoid a tribunal hearing for disobeying his superior’s orders and wrecking his command. He was able to wrap up his own version of the Gettysburg battle. His story glorified him and made his superior, Gen Meade incompetent.
