... When the First World War started in August 1914, the United s of America adopted a policy of isolationism. On August 19, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared neutrality of the US. In his address to the Congress, he made said that since the people of the US come from many nations, many of which were at war with each, taking sides in the war could result in divisions within among the Americans. To avoid such conflict within the US, Wilson chose to remain neutral during the war. However, over the next few years, a number of incidents slowly changed this policy of neutrality.
