She struggled to find the mean to preserve her childhood innocence that was brought by her being exposed to the disgusting Nazi regime (Zuzak, 2006). A Jewish man was taken and hidden by Liesel’s parents because the political condition of Germany had ultimately worsened. The Jewish man was called Max and because of this humanly acts, they exposed the family to a great danger.
Hans taught Liesel how to read in secret after developing a close relationship with her. Apart from sharing the written word with Max, who was a Jewish refugee, she also stole the books that were targeted for destruction by the Nazi soldiers for the purpose of gaining knowledge. Eventually, she tried to cope up with the trauma that the violent conditions that were surrounding her had caused by (Zuzak, 2006). Her journey of self-discovery came back, having formed a new family and her life as being “the book thief”.
The central character of the novel was Liesel Meminger. During the period of adolescence, she was adopted as a young girl. In addition, she had hair that was blonde, and it closely resembled the brand of the German blonde-haired person. On the other hand, she had many problems even when she smiled; she looked like she was starving. Despite all the suffering, she had experienced in her childhood, she rarely exposed it to anyone (Zuzak, 2006). She landed into all this trouble when her father left her and the family, and she had no choice than to be a foster child yet in all she was hardworking and determined.
At the time the story ends, she will be fifteen years and from the context, we found that the bomb explosion destroyed her family. Liesel was unable at the beginning of the book, to read and write but did not demoralize her spirit (Zuzak, 2006).
