Religious thinkers and philosophers often give the definition of happiness considering the terms of living a life that is good, or flourishing, contrary to the definition that simply defines happiness as an emotion. In this sense, happiness was used in translating the Greek Eudaimonia, and it is still used in the study of virtue ethics (Hyman and Laura 80-85).
In my perspective, happiness is a blurry concept that can be used to portray various meanings to different people in different perspectives. The part that is most challenging in the science of happiness is trying to identify the various concepts of happiness, and also, split the concepts into their constituents where applicable. The concepts that are related include flourishing, quality of life, and well-being. There is only one author that gives the definition of happiness as contentment (Hyman and Laura 90-92). Other various commentators lay their focus on the differences that exist between the hedonistic tradition of the avoidance of the unpleasant experiences and seeking the pleasant ones and the eudaimonic culture of living a life that is full and in a way that is deeply satisfying.
Many different perspectives on what causes happiness and on the factors that have correlation with happiness have been availed by research though no method has been validated in the perspective of substantially improving the long-term happiness in a way that is meaningful to most people. As Mark Leary observes, human beings are happiest when they are basking in the praise and acceptance of others. Jonathan Haidt and Sara Algoe assert that happiness may be defined as the label for the family that is made up of emotional states that are related, such ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Love, Respect and Caring for Others: Role in Personal Happiness

..., recreational and work activities. It is, thus, discernible that Bernard’s definition of love as involving intense emotional attraction is what provides the divergent view on the role of love in achieving happiness. Engaging in strong and rewarding social and recreational relationships with those around involves valuing, respecting, caring and loving them. Thus, it can be argued that Bernard still appreciates the importance of love in the pursuit of happiness, with the only differences being his definition of it to refer to close relationships. Other elements of Bernard’s discussion also highlight the important role of love in happiness. For instance, he...

...? Exemplification Assignment Introduction Benjamin Franklin’s aphorism “In this World nothing can be said to be Certain, Except Death and Taxes” reminds me of a short anecdote that I came across in one of my readings. Lao Tzu who lived in the ancient China about 25 centuries back used to tell this story to put his point across that how uncertain our life is! There lived a poor farmer in the small village in China. He had a beautiful brown horse. The horse was so special that even the king did not have any of that kind. King was ready to give huge compensation to the farmer for this horse but the farmer did not agree to part with his precious possession as the horse was very dear to him. Villagers were also jealous to him....

What's Your Definition of Happiness

As I take it, then, well-being is synonymous with persons own good, welfare, or interest. To say that something contributes to one's well-being is simply to say that it is in one's interest, that it is good for one, or that it makes one's life go better. Understood as such, well-being is an inherently evaluative concept: when we say that something promotes one's welfare, we ascribe a certain type of value to that thing. In particular, we identify it as having prudential value (Silverstein, 2000, p. 279) Ascribing values to objects is certainly an interpretive process, but what has value, the object or the perceiver’s interpretation of the object. One would have to posit that the object is inherently valueless other than the...

...Reflections on the Chapter Exemplifications Reflections on the Chapter Exemplifications The chapter made me realize about the importance of giving examples in an essay. It is true that examples can explain a topic very easily but is often difficult to present an apt example which is pertinent to the topic. The steps mentioned in the chapter will help me in future when I need to complete an essay on any topic. It is also true that the use of examples can increase the interest of the audience in any essay. Success - Definition/Exemplification

...Success - Definition/Exemplification Success is commonly defined as an accomplishment of any purpose or aim. However, this meaning has lots of variants among different individuals in respect to their varied perspectives. For some, success might be just accumulation of money or material possession, but for others, it might include intangible things such as fame, respect, social status, peace of mind or any favorable outcome in their business or personal arena.
