With the new technological innovations of this century that continue to shock even the inventors, there is possibility of them developing a machine that will have a conscience in the future.
One of the best brain scientists in the world Christof Koch who works for the Allen Institute for Brain Science located in Seattle is very positive of having a breakthrough in the scientific and technological industry which will lead to development of a conscious machine. He believes that it is only a matter of organizing the machine to work like a mammalian brain and the results will be epic (Regalado 2014). The institute he is working in has dedicated millions of dollars in neuroscience research of the mammalian brain studying its neurons and synapses and trying to find out about consciousness through the Human Genome Project. He vouches for the integrated information theory which will be able to explain about consciousness in detail which would in turn lead to development of a machine with the same components, neurons and synapses to enable it have a conscience.
According to the authors Tononi and Koch (2008), the concept of consciousness is as imperfect to understand and explain in detail as the law of physics and other sciences but it is there and can be explored further. If there is a theory to explain about consciousness no matter how complicated or vague it currently is, it means that there is hope that further research, development and expansion of the theory will lead to reproduction of machineries with inbuilt conscious and hence will act, think, feel and make decisions similarly to a human being. Detailed clinical study using sophisticated instruments have provided a basic understanding of the process of consciousness (Tononi and Koch 2008). These results are the basics of the ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Conscience or the Competitive Edge

...such as Nike can run into a variety of problems when it decides to outsource, like what it wants to consider or prioritize when moving certain operations overseas. First of all, many companies grossly underestimate the time, money, and people that it takes to successfully outsource a portion or all of their operations. In choosing a location, companies must consider which locations have the cheaper labor prices if they are going to save money by outsourcing in the first place. Choosing an area with a high standard of living will end up costing the company way more than what it is worth (DiCarlo, 2004). There is a tremendously big step that is often overlooked when companies are considering...

State Machine

... Machine Introduction: machine is a device in which the output depends in some systematic way on variables other than the immediate inputs to the device. These other variables are called the state variables for the machine, and depend on the history of the machine. The behavior of a state machine can be completely described by a state table or equivalently by a state diagram. State machines can be used to specify the behaviors of objects in a system by describing the relationships between the states of the object and its ability to respond to events presented to it. Suitable choice of semantics for state machines allows multiple machines to be composed in the description of a single object. State diagram can be used to graphically... ...

Machine guns

..., despite the above quarters of million Americans own machine guns. The National Firearms Act 1934 is the nodal act that governs collection of Machine Guns for any purpose or as a hobby. Before 1934, there was no bar which owned machine guns, but the NFA passed in 1934 made it mandatory to register the weapon with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire arms (BATF). Machine guns have never been largely used in a crime as the procedure for owning a machine gun is very stringent. It must be noted that machine guns cannot be purchased across the counter and also a lengthy period from 60 to180 days elapse before you...

...individual is to protect or preserve these unlimited rights of property, and when any community fails in doing so, it can be subjected to be overthrown by breaking the human laws that favor it. There are always tensions between one’s conscience and human law, but then, conscientious objection of laws can have significant interpretation to promote human rights, particularly during unjust circumstances. However, the conflicting nature of the individual’s conscience with that of social or personal beliefs and laws has possibly contributed too many atrocities in world history. Being reluctant to unfair situations cannot be justified in any way, but...

...Machine-to-Machine Communication Disruptive technology is basically a replacement of an old technology by an innovation that creates new market value for products or services. Adoption of disruptive technology can be either risky or profitable venture. By using a technology in its early stage can enable one to establish new markets but can also become vulnerable to unforeseen risks. The key lies in choosing the correct time to enter the market (Evans, 10). Disruptive technology can change the structure of an industry by replacing traditional values with new values. It can encourage corporate planners to embark in new...

...any segment of patient care. This conscientious opposition to health care continuously affects an individual well-being or access to health care since the oppositions interfere with the provision of health services. If faced with an issue of abortion, this use of the conscience clause is significant so as to save the life of the unborn child. Abortion is a concrete issue that a woman decides due to pressure from family or his partner. Asking the patient questions in a sympathetic manner will make her open up to discuss the issue with you. So the woman might be in a confusing situation and as a health care provider, you must be capable of coming up with answers that can save the situation. Referring her...

Can a machine have a conscience

...Can a machine have a conscience? In the artificial intelligence field, artificial consciousness or rather machine consciousness is aimed at defining whether machines have the right conscience. The debate over artificial consciousness plausibility has been ongoing. In most cases, theorists always hold skeptical views regarding the conscience of machines (Hall, 38). In fact, they claim that conscience in machines can only be achieved in specific physical systems since consciousness has properties, which necessarily depend...

Each and every daypeople see and hear news about breakthroughs in the world of IT, robotics and nanotechnology. Integrating this with science-fiction, people pose a serious question as to whether machines can ever have a conscience; this is basically whether computers can discern between right or wrong like humans. Most philosophers argue nearly all human actions arise from motive, desire or impulse (Danielson 540). From this, one can see that if one the...
