The difference can be noticed at how the individuals became acquainted with one another. Ashoke and Ashima met through a formal meeting that had been organized by her mother, resembling a slightly twisted Cinderella story. She had seen Ashoke’s shoes in the hallways which she proceeded to before their encounter. This seems to be a memorable event which she reminisces when polishing her husband’s shoes. However, Gogol and Maxime meet whilst he is working in New York at a bar. The meeting is less formal than that of Ashima and Ashoke; however, Gogol still believes that she was the perfect match for him due to her classy background. In addition, he was attracted to her uninhibited sexuality and American roots. This also shows the difference in values between the individuals. In addition, Ashime does not approve the relationship between Gogol and Maxime. The parents also had the central role in the meeting of Ashima and Ashoke, which was not the case in Gogol’s case. In essence, the involvement of the parents in the relationships can be noticed from the meeting of the couples. In the Bengali culture that Ashima and Ashoke grew up in, the parents arranged the marriage of the children. Ashima's mother introduced her to the men which she felt were suitable for her to marry. However, Gogol was the one who chose Maxime. Furthermore, Ashime did not approve that she was suitable and appropriate for her son, as she was completely different to the typical good Bengali girl. In addition, the amount of time that Ashoka and Gogol spend with the families of their partners is also different.
