Mankind perceived the world very different eyes, in all that is happening - the will of God or the Devils wiles. And what would a man did, all in one minute could turn against him. People were puppets in the hands of the church and the court.
As we can see the main idea of “The Crucible” is suspected and unconfirmed devil’s moving in girls and subsequent trial which is called Salem witch trials. A group of girls in the head with Abigail Williams, the niece of Reverend Parris, the minister of Salem’s church, goes in the woods with a servant Tituba who can help them to conjure spirits and bewitch beloved guys. Among the not-so-sinful desires of other girls is a cruel death wish for the wife of John Proctor by Abigail. The matter is that she wants to be with him at any cost and Elizabeth Proctor is an obstacle to this.
Let’s see the whole seriousness of the situation which is influenced both in and out by particular characters of the play. The first one is Reverend Parris who becomes the witness of girls’ action in the woods and hides the fact because of fear to be deprived of the parish and loss his power. The next character is Thomas Putham, Salem’s landowner, whose daughter as well as Pariss’s Betty stays unconscious after returning from woods. Naturally that this causes Puritans to suspect the devil’s presence in the village. Salem’s Reverend decides to invite Mr. Hale, the minister summoned to check for witchcraft. After his arrival Abigail starts her game and in order to be innocent in the eyes of society she slanders uninvolved people with the support of the other girls intimidated by her. Salem is occupied by total fear and hysteria. Locals face the phenomenon they don’t know how to cope with. Moreover this power is invisible for them. All of this throws people into a panic.
