Studies conducted in the past have indicated the possibility of mental health problems among victims of bullying. A study presented at the Annual American psychological Association convention in 2010 claimed that victims of bullying were a high suicide risk, depression, poor performance in schools and low self-esteem (Pappas, 2013). Copeland and his peers used data collected over 20 years that had been examined in 1,420 children and their parents concerning their mental health from age 9, 11 or 13. The children were assessed annually until they were 16 years. They then came back for follow-up at the ages of 19, 21 and 25. The study focused on four groups; non-bullies, pure victims of bullying; they did not bully others in return, pure bullies and bully-victims; they were bullied and in return bullied others.
Results from the study indicated that 335 children representing 21.6% were victims of bullying. The researchers then looked into their mental health outcomes. The research found out that victims of bullying were more likely to experience anxiety disorder compared to children who were not bullied or were bully-victims.
In another study, published in Psychological science states that victims of bullying were more likely to have mental problems, serious illnesses and a high likelihood of languishing in poverty (Sean Coughlan, 2013). In the dynamic process of examining the effect of mental health, one of the risk factors among victims of bullying included suicide. Though no concrete full proof exists, there is a likelihood of individuals who have undergone bullying to contemplate suicide (Losey 33).
