Download file to see previous pages More specifically, Stengel writes about Mandela’s everyday activities as well as what he learnt as a child and states that it is the knowledge he obtained in his childhood is what had defined the kind of person he was in life. Also, Stengel describes Mandela’s personality. He states the leader was not very sentimental because of the life circumstances and at the same time he was helpful and compassionate. What is more, in several sentences, he shows how prison influenced Mandela and, in particular, how it helped him become mature. Overall, the author of the article under consideration describes Mandela as a common person with flaws, not a saint, but with a great sense of justice and even greater ability to unite people.
Perhaps, the best thing about the article under consideration is that its author does not depict Nelson Mandela as a person without any flaws. He says that sometimes Mandela was bitter, “fiery and rowdy” when he was a young revolutionary and mentions his hostile attitude towards Indians and communists (Stengel). In other words, Stengel writes Mandela was quite immature when he just entered upon his path of fight. However, prison changed him and “formed the Mandela we know” (Stengel). Thus, the author suggests that Mandela was not a saint but a common person, who was able to overcome his weaknesses, though. In fact, this is one of the traits which attract me in Nelson Mandela. He was a great person; but knowing that he also had flaws, which he fought and overcame, adds even more respect to his personality.
Nelson Mandela fought for equality between native South Africans and Europeans who came to his country to rule it. It was a great injustice that people could not lead a decent life in the country that was rightfully theirs and had to obey outlanders who thought of Africans as of the inferior and live in the setting of apartheid.
