Individual differences really does influence our choice in the different genres of movies but when it comes to horror movies, majority of people do not mind watching a horror movie in fact they become intrigued by the idea. Specific movie genres serve the purpose of catering to the various preferences and tastes of a diverse audience the entertainment industry attracts. Some people like action movies others like comedy and others like drama but most of all these people also like horror movies. In my experience, there are some diehard fans horror movies and some people would not watch horror movies because they are too scary for them, and they get nightmares. The same people still cannot control the urge to watch a horror movie every time there is a new one showing at the theaters. This warrants the question why would someone choose to watch movies that include scenes of death and violence? As Stephen King says, and I quote “I think that we’re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylum only hide it a little better”. King goes on to say that people do this to show that they can, that they are not afraid and that they can ride the “roller coaster” (497). This hope or courage so to speak goes with age. Most people who love watching horror movies are young and below the age of forty.
The diehard fans of horror movies like our very own King, watch horror movies because they have acknowledged their inner emotions and fears from their own body and they also recognize that it requires its own exercise to maintain proper muscle tone (498).
