Download file to see previous pages... In the king’s case, it is he that leads himself up the path and eliminates the opportunity to get to know what is actually happening in his life. Oedipus once famous for his great intelligence and ability to solve riddles and get to the bottom of conundrums becomes the main source of the problem as well as the main hurdle to solve it. As Sophocles shows, the king has several opportunities to learn the truth but he misses them voluntarily, perhaps, due to his unconscious fear to get to know it. Oedipus has enough evidence to be able to put two and two together but chooses not to do this even though the facts lie right beneath his nose. In fact, like in the very end the tragedy, he blinds himself not to see the truth, in a figurative sense though. At first, Teiresias, the blind prophet, tells, “I say you are the murderer of the king whose murderer you seek” and that “with those you love best you live in foulest shame unconsciously and do not see where you are in calamity” (Sophocles lines 415-416, 423-425). In other words, Teiresias accuses Oedipus in the king’s murder. Oedipus does not want to believe, starts delving into details and continues examining other witnesses. Soon, he gets to know from Jocasta that she was told her husband was killed by strangers at a crossroads; Oedipus remembers he killed a man under similar circumstances but chooses not to consider this fact. He does not even consider the coincidence that he has a swollen feet and “after his [child’s] birth King Laius pierced his ankles” (Sophocles line 826). In other words, Oedipus fools himself and thus, uncertain vision is the result of his tragedy.
Othello’s uncertain vision is of completely different character.
