The nature of the story leaves the reader’s guessing as to the real reason behind the revenge. The language is so unambiguous and evidences so few that many have decided that Montresor was nothing more than a crazed, scorned noble man who is driven by jealousy to punish someone who still had his fortune safe and sound. However, I would suggest that Fortunato is also to be blamed for his eventual fate if simply because he was too ignorant to understand the actions and behavior of his “friend”. After all misunderstandings is real life often occur because of some fault from the side of both parties, it is very rare that one party can claim total innocence. Also Montresor is not portrayed as a person who was driven to an impulsive rage, rather he has meticulously planned out his revenge and that tells us that he has had some long lasting grievances against Fortunato.
The brief character sketch that we can gather from the story indicates that Fortunato is a man of means and who is not shy about flaunting his fortune in front of his less privileged friend. Twice Montresor mentions his own inferiority compared to Fortunato, e.g “You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter.” (Poe, pg 1111) and at neither point is Fortunato gracious enough to give even a courtesy denial to acknowledge the presence of his friend. His arrogance and confidence about his own self worth is the main driving trait which made him the focus of Montresor anger. At another point, when Montresor is exalting his family’s history Fortunato further insults him by mentioning that he is unaware of their Mason background and also doesn’t remember the family’s arms. These slight insults ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

...of malice, but more of a place of always thinking “what’s the big deal?” Burger is the opposite – he apparently was poor, worked his way up on the ladder, was not given anything, had to work for everything, and takes everything very seriously. So, both men came upon fame and fortune, but in very different ways. As indicated above, there is nothing in the early part of the story that would indicate that horror would be befalling Kennedy by the end of the story. This is in contrast to “The Cask of the Amontillado,” the story upon which this story was evidently based. In “The Cask of the Amontillado,” we know from the beginning that the narrator had a problem with...

In 'The Cask of Amontillado", with metaphor, allusion and irony, and the reality of "the colossal support of the roof of the catacombs, backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite" (Poe, 1094) he created horror, murder, madness and revenge. The victim, narrator and reader are enclosed in a sequence of ever-mounting fear and tension, to the final entrapment. Almost all the main characters hide their feelings and this process of concealing leads to a plethora of problems in the story. Montresor decides that it is the right time for revenge but he conceals his feelings after making the decision. “When Montresor decides that it is time to seek revenge for the "thousand injuries of Fortunato," he does not make his feelings known.” (The Cast of Amontillado) Pride can lead to downfall this is perhaps the most important thing which must be learned from this...

The Cask of Amontillado

...The very first paragraph of The Cask of Amontillado is the first evidence that the narrator is reliable. He rationally spells out the entire reason for killing Fortunato the way he does. He says, “A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong (Poe, 107).” In short, the narrator is saying that two criteria need to be met in order for him to get back at Fortunato for his insult. First, he needs to know exactly who was killing him and, second, he (the narrator) needed to get away with it. This level of logic and clear statement of purpose leads the reader to believe that the...
