The move has the main purpose of encouraging some staff and students to abandon the smoking habit and prevents further influence on others who are yet to be submerged in the same behaviour. There is no information in the law that prevents any statutory body from developing additional policies and guidelines in the creation of smoke-free campus environment. It is worth to consider some input towards the fight for better learning environment. The ultimate goal is to achieve a smoke-free environment since the second-hand smoke hurts other innocent students rather than the individual who claims the right to smoke.
Campus grounds should be no smoking zones. This should clearly state the distance far away from the institution building where the smoker should observe the regulation. If need be, potential smoking area should probably be 25 feet from the campus buildings. The observed distant rule will clearly discourage most of the smokers in the campus from the act that should be enforced alongside other consequences. At such a distance, second hand smoke presents no effect to other non-smoking accomplices hence creation of smoke-free campus environment.
The act of smoking is prohibited in campus and colleges grounds. In order to separate smokers and non-smokers, there is a need to create distinct areas commonly known as smoking zones. These areas are carefully designed in an enclosed area where the smoke undergoes careful stages of treatment before being allowed in the free air (Boyle 66). Other exceptional private areas for smoking could also be present to preserve individual privacy. These grounds include personal vehicles and private homes.
