However, in most cases discrepancies are bound to rise which would ultimately lead to a very stressful environment for the students. It is thus impertinent that universities strive to provide a student-friendly environment which would provide both academic learning and also cater to the personal needs of the students (Oswalt & Riddock, 2007; Agolla & Ongori, 2009).
Many researchers have also defined stress as an adverse reaction shown by people towards excessive pressures or demands that they are required to fulfill. When individuals experience situations which they consider difficult to cope with, then they are more likely to feel stressed (Agolla & Ongori, 2009). In the academic setting several stress factors have been identified through various studies conducted to explore academic stress. In general students have reported being stressed about earning good grades which would help them get their degrees. Other issues pertaining to their studies that are considered stressful by many students includes excess homework and assignments, stress related to time management, lack of financial support for their education, and strained relationships with professors or their peers. Many students have also reported increased competition among peers as a stress factor. In addition, examination failures, lack of financial support to meet their personal expenses and family problems have also been found to cause stress among students (Oswalt & Riddock, 2007; Agolla & Ongori, 2009). While most of the studies have focused on undergraduate students, graduate and professional students have also reported stress during their tenure at universities.
