Modern societies would laugh and scoff at the very idea of vampires existing today because vampires are thought to be mere products of an overly active imagination but in early times, even going back to antiquity, people really believed in vampires due to ignorance and superstition combined with specific cultural practices. Vampires were originally believed to be revenants (old French word for “someone who returned”), version of ghosts or corpses which became animated (came back to life) after being possessed by an evil spirit or a witch or of suicide or murder victims and came back to seek revenge on people who maltreated them while still alive (Dundes 113). The myth of the vampire can be traced to mostly Slavic-speaking people of countries like Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia in the Balkans.
The myth of vampires became a trend among these peoples and soon got introduced into Western Europe as the myth gained credence as a part of the popular culture due to superstition and fear of the mystery of what happens to the human body after its death. Modern versions of the vampire fiction started with the publication of the novel The Vampyre (spelled with a “y”) written by John Polidon and then followed a few decades later with the publication in 1897 of the most-famous vampire novel of all, Dracula, by Bram Stoker with its setting in Transylvania (now part of modern-day Romania) located in the mountainous region of eastern Europe (Felix 6) that attracts many people for its “dark tourism” sites.
