First and foremost, it is a verified fact that the democratic Western nations do not intend to spy on their citizens and the citizens of other nations on some flimsy or unreasonable grounds. The 9/11 mayhem has once and for all unravelled the potential of the international terrorist organizations and the extent of damage that they can inflict on the Western democracies if something is not urgently done to check and restrain them (Fetzer 2007, p. 123). Not only the international terrorist groups that are inimical to the West are getting more organized and lethal, but there is credible evidence to prove that they use sophisticated internet and satellite technologies to communicate and convey their plans and designs, which are difficult to trace (Lutz & Lutz 2008). Hence, going by the current threats being faced by the Western democracies, pragmatically speaking it is imperative to set aside the privacy arguments for the time to allow the law enforcement agencies to spy over the people, so as to enable them to register a befitting response to the terrorist threats faced by the democratic nations. Privacy and other human values hold relevance only in a world that is not threatened by large scale violence and manmade disasters. Allowing for the spying on the citizens by the law enforcement agencies is the need of the hour.
The other big thing is that the infringement of a democratic right of the citizens by a government needs to be seen in the light of the intentions based on which that right is curtailed by the state. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
