Teasing and name-calling are quite common among little children. Pre-school children often demonstrate a form of playful teasing by saying silly things and laughing at others. They also sometimes comment innocently on something different or new about another child. It is worth noting that young children often say anything that is in their mind because they have not yet learnt the art of filtering what can be said and what cannot. Judging from the reactions of others, children start learning the feeling of being called names as well as how to respond when one is being called names. Young children are quite aware of the fact that their actions can hurt others. However, their name-calling acts are not deliberate. In the presence of older siblings, young children, young children can be exposed to name-calling at an earlier staged compared to children who do have older siblings (Aveline, 2003).
As children enter Kindergarten, they learn to abide by some kind of rules and by and large, they desire to belong to a certain group and fit in it. This simply means they want to have friends to play with besides being invited to parties and having dates. When a child reaches the elementary level, social acceptance becomes quite important during this time. Children can be forced to get involved in name-calling so as to how their affiliation and power with a certain peer group; conversely, a child may express the feeling of being a victim in an effort of gaining sympathy and attention from a certain social group. As the elementary school children develop their language skills, the tendency to use more hurtful words in their name-calling activities increases.
