As such, one would describe the combined social lives of people in a society when combined together and aimed towards the identification and mitigation of problems in the society. In the event that a discursive space is formed in the society, members of the society would likely come together and discuss issues of common interest to the society. In general terms, the term would refer to the society’s realm of social life upon which public opinions are formed, and in which all the citizens are granted access (Gripsrud 25).
Glenn Hendler stated in his text: “I read Horatio Alger’s novels and the responses they provoked, like the controversies over Olmsted’s plan for Central Park, as times in the great effort to outline the American civic sphere, particularly with the aim of defining the roles men and boys were to play in the economic market and the mass cultural public.” He also sought after showing two individuals to readers who were particularly struggling to create a public sphere through different means, one is Central Park, an enormous space which enables people to be physically separated from the economic market, and the other is the book – Ragged Dick – which forms a mental sphere allowing readers to escape from the commercial world for a short period of time. Consequently, it has become like a debate partner to the viewers.
However, further controversies have come into existence. First, for two decades, discussions of the nineteenth-century division between the public and private had been framed along with the notion of gendered incoherent spheres. “Masculine is to feminine as the reason is to sentiment; and the economic market is to the domestic sphere as the political is to the personal or the public to the private” (Gripsrud 77).
