Corruption and arrogance among some of our top ranking officials in government and in companies that we depend on also portrays a negative image of how those with knowledge can abuse the power that comes with it.
Langston Hughes in his poem “Theme for English B” written in 1900, is expressing his wish to do away with racial discrimination. He tries to do so by showing that all Americans are similar and can gain from each other even though they have different skin colors. It is a poem about an African American student who is given an assignment to write about himself at a time when African Americans were not regarded as being Americans.
The poem is addressed to his professor who in his eyes is a representation of the white population in America. The professor said to them “let that page come out of you...then it will be true” and this gets him wondering if it is that simple. He goes ahead to explain why it is not that simple: at the age of twenty two, being the only person of color in his class and living in Harlem which he says is a poor community. He uses the metaphor, “on the hill above Harlem” for his college to create a picture of the difference in social class between him and his classmates. He uses words well to describe his path to school in a vivid manner. The description given by the student expresses his ethos, how he understands the life of black people in detail. The author shows that he is aware of his limited knowledge when he says, “it is not easy to know what is true for you or me at twenty two, my age” but still sees himself similar to the teacher.
