Slang language is based on convenience to the people who are using it and focusses on personalization of communication. This paper describes how I adapt my use of language, its importance and significance to the language.
If we are to look at the type of communication that occur in my language community then we find that there is an adaptation of the formal language ad more simplification for informal usage. This simplification can be excluding to the people who are not part of my language community. For example, if I were at home, I would greet my father courteously by saying “Hello, Dad” or “How are you Dad” by that is in formal communication. On the other hand if I was out meeting my friends I would greet them by exclaiming “Hey bro, whaddup?” or “How’s it hangin’ yo?”. This communication if witnessed by my father would seem odd to him and he would not completely understand it.
My language community involves my peers and because of the internet and cell phones we do not always communicate face to face. Communication takes place on places like Facebook and also through SMS. In these forms of communicate with my language community there is a vast change in the type of language used. Long words and sentences are not used by y language community because it takes too long and we prefer to shorten long sentences or complex words by turning them into acronyms. Because of the informal nature of our language community we do not follow rules regarding proper spelling and punctuation. The most important thing for my language community is to communicate is the fastest way and in a manner that is unique to our group. Our language has to be unique because most times we are engaging in a conversation that is very exclusive to us. A language reflects the characteristics of an individual as well as beliefs and practices of the community in which they belong. Each community has its own language that expresses the attitude, values and ideas of its people. Thus, language enables people to communicate their thoughts, cultural beliefs and practices with other people of the same community.
According to dictionary.com (2012), racialize means “to perceive, experience, view, in a racial context” and “to categorize, or differentiate on the basis of race.” I am a working single mother who was born and raised in the Bronx. I have lived in bad neighbourhoods, which we call ghettoes.
From these modest first steps, I could say that I had come on in leaps and bounds but does not necessarily mean that I never had some literacy in foreign language especially English. English is my second language so I can testify that I had faced many problems as an international student especially when trying to socialize with my friends and even reading it fluently has never been an easy task.
I love the people, my neighbors, because I grew up with most of them, so racialization is not much of an issue as far as I am concerned. But as a family that is half-Taiwanese and half-Japanese, ours causes a lot of confusion because my country (Taiwan) used to be a colony of Japan, and even now, many decades later, when some new people in my neighborhood learn that we are half-Japanese, you can see their brains as they think of all sorts of questions, making mental classifications that affect their behavior.
