Download file to see previous pages “A cat in the rain” follows the life of a American wife, who is vacationing with her husband in Italy, but she is stuck staring out the window as heavy rain is pouring down outside. She sees a cat, completely soaked hiding underneath a table that evokes pity in the wife’s heart and she steps out in the rain to rescue the cat.
On her way out, she meets the innkeeper who only talks to her for a short while but impresses her immensely. She walks out in the rain but fails to find the cat, which slightly dejects her and she goes back up to her room, where she starts complaining to her husband about all the things she wants in her life but is blatantly avoided by her husband, who continues to read the newspaper. The story ends on an ambiguous note, with the maid bringing in a cat however, it is not known whether or not it is the same cat that the wife stepped out to save.
On the other hand, “The secret life of Walter Mitty” is told from the perspective of Walter Mitty, an average husband driving his domineering wife through town to help her run errands. The plot actually revolves around the various fantasies that Walter has that causes him to day dream as he drives around and all these fantasies are triggered by a stimulus in his environment. Walter is inept at most things because of his daydreaming habit and is often chastised by his wife.
His first fantasy is that he is commanding a navy hydroplane through a tempest as he is drove the car, when he passes by a hospital he fantasies that he is world renowned surgeon in the middle of a surgery, as he hears a newsboy yelling about a trial he imagines himself as the outlaw being tried by the court, while he waits for his wife at the hairdresser he sees a German plane he imagines himself as a brave British, who is about to sacrifice his life for the country.
