No one ever entered the forest at night. It held many dark and deep secrets. It stood at the far edge of the village, standing guard during the day. At night, it loomed large over the little houses. She had often stared out of her castle window, wondering what mysteries it held. Why everyone was so afraid? Isabella shook her head clear of these thoughts and continued walking amongst the dark trees. The only sound she could hear were her timid footsteps and the breathing of Gabriel against her. As she moved deeper into the forest, the thickness of night closed in, almost stifling her. It was becoming hard to see even her shadow and the moon had long since disappeared behind a dismal cloud. Isabella had lost track of how long she had been walking for. She wanted to stop, her sides hurt and Gabriel was starting to whimper because of the cold and hunger. “It’s ok little Gabriel,” Isabella cooed in his ear. “Not far to go now, we’re almost at the clearing…almost.” She reassured herself more than her baby brother. The dry twigs crackled beneath Isabella’s feet as she willed herself to trudge on. It wasn’t long before she saw the beam of moonlight streaming down onto a small, round clearing. The tall, dark trees stood like soldiers, surrounding the clearing in a full circle. The grass was almost luminescent in the bright light of the full moon which had finally emerged from behind a gray cloud. Isabella stopped, afraid to go in the clearing. The darkness of the shadowy trees offered some shelter from the open and unprotected clearing. She decided to sit in the hollow of a root jutting out next to her, hoping for it to provide some protection from the sudden cold that gripped her body. “We’ll sit here and wait for them Gabriel,” Isabella whispered to her sleeping baby brother. The warmth of his tiny body reassured her that she wasn’t alone. She hugged him tighter and held her body firmly against the rough bark of the tree, staring intensely at the clearing for any sign of them. Her Nanny’s words still rang in her ears. “You must wait for them in the clearing little one. They will come. The time is just right and the stars in perfect alignment. It’s the only time you can save Gabriel.” Nanny had said in a hushed tone, holding up her gnarled fingers and squinting her beady eyes. Isabella knew that Nanny was right. Ever since his birth, Gabriel had been in danger from their Uncle Glosmor. Isabella had been an only child for a long time, and her uncle had always been satisfied and smug at the thought that he was next in line to the throne after her father, King Ayron. Once Gabriel was born she saw the way Uncle Glosmor looked at him, eyes filled with fear and disgust. She knew that Gabriel threatened his dreams of becoming king. Her worst fears were confirmed at the grand banquet held in Gabriel’s honour where she overheard her uncle plotting with some of his trusty men to kill the baby. Isabella turned to the only person she could trust, Nanny. Her parents would never have believed her for they were too trustworthy and naive, fooled by Uncle Glosmor’s display of loyalty and devotion. She knew that the only safety for Gabriel was outside the castle walls. Isabella took a deep breath as she remembered the last conversation she had with ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
