"Mechanical Ethics"

General motors paid more attention to the ignition problem. The engineers became more innovative in the process. They had to install a key ring that prevented the movement of the ignition key in an up-down motion. The company had to invest more in research and development. The aim of the research was to understand the ignition problem for the betterment of the product. The company was able to address the safety concerns and became alert to potential problems.
It was unethical that the company knew the problem through its engineers, but decided to ignore the concern. Most of the crashes occurred where the drivers exceeded the speed limits on unpaved roads. Ethically, the company needed to issue a disclaimer that the vehicles were not fit for high speed on such roads. The recall was not cost effective for the company as it embarked on actions that would save the situation.
My opinion on the issue is that the company was ethically wrong to ignore such a concern. It is not in order to put the lives of people at risk with an aim of profit maximization. The company should embrace and uphold customer safety rules and regulations. This would ensure that the customers became satisfied with any decisions that the company made. The company has clear ethical policies laid down in its Memorandum of Association. It should ensure the production of safe and clean products that are consistent with the generally accepted international standards.
I will use my knowledge and expertise to ensure that the human welfare is enhanced. I will be honest in every project that I undertake. I will ensure that the decisions I make are free of bias. I will strive to become a professional of integrity to my employer, the clients, and the public.  ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

...? Mechanical Dynamic Mechanical Dynamic In the world today where technology has advanced and world has become a global village, thereis also a lot of pressure on the automotive industry, pressure of inflation, consumer action, oil crisis and majorly government regulations. Product requirement is that it is a light weight product which is reliable and efficient. Corporate social responsibility is also a very important factor here as per which noise pollution needs to be avoided the maximum they can and also less vibrations are required. Designers now face a higher challenge of product development and thus they require better tools and equipment for testing. Mechanical dynamics is one...

...mechanisms of the technique as well as the functions, properties and experimental setup (Sullivan & Liu 2004). This technique has been found to be easier, more accurate faster and cost effective as compared to the use of pressure ports and computational fluid dynamics for external pressure management. The traditional pressure measurement methods would take at least one week to obtain the results while the pressure sensitive paint technique takes 15 minutes only to produce reliable results which include a the global surface pressure measurements. It is also easier as it does not require one to drill pressure ports or wait for the computer to process numbers as in the cases for use of pressure ports and computational fluid...

Mechanical Engineering- Mechanical Project
...?Mechanical Engineering- Mechanical Project Materials remain the fundamental components utilised in construction of engineering structures. In the development process, the structural requirements remain essential in assisting developers into deciding on the correct materials for use within different structures. Making material choice remains an essential element for enhancing proper functioning of the structure, upon construction. The selection process for materials follows analysis of the functions for the proposed structure being constructed. The functions determine the required material strength among other properties; hence selection of material meeting structural requirements (Jones 1975). Other than strength and stiffness... . The...

...Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineering is an engineering discipline applying the principles of material science and physics in designing, analysis, maintenance and manufacturing of mechanical systems. This discipline of engineering encompasses the use and production of heat and mechanical power in the design, production, manufacture and operation of tools and machines. It is recognized as one of the largest, oldest and broadest disciplines of engineering. Mechanical engineers generally use the principles of materials, energy and mechanics in the design, and manufacture of devices and machines of various types...

...Task The condition of flow (laminar, transitional or turbulent) in a pipe due to frictional effects can be determined by knowing the Reynolds number. Reynolds number is a dimensionless quantity (Ratio of dynamic force to the viscous force) that helps to classify flow. Reynolds number for a given pipe diameter D is given by Red = Vave D ρ / υ ….. (1) Where Vave is the velocity of the flow, ρ is density of the fluid and υ is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Generally the laminar flow corresponding to Red ≤ 2100, transient occur in the range of 2100 4000 and turbulent flow is for Red ≥ 4000. Now in order to calculate Reynolds number we would use a head orifice flow meter. The arrangement of controlled water supply... The condition of ...

...Mechanical Engineering Introduction Mechanical engineering is a broad that derives its scope from the necessity to manufacture and design everything from large systems (such as machine tools and spacecraft) to small devices and individual parts (such as Inkjet printer nozzles and micro scale sensors). The function of the mechanical engineer is to design a product from an idea and take it to the marketplace. In order to finish this, a number of skills are required. The mechanical engineer is required to acquire certain knowledge and skills. He is needed to understand the thermal environment and forces that a product, its subsystems, or its parts will meet (Columbia University 1; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 1; America Society... of...

...A senior design essay for mechanical engineering Introduction Mechanical engineering is considered to be one of the oldest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers work on the principles of material, energy and mechanics for designing and manufacturing devices and machines of almost all types. They create systems and processes that may support in driving the technology as well as the industry. The major aspects of this profession are the flexibility, breadth and individuality that it offers. The individual choices made by the mechanical engineers most probably help them in defining their career path. Mechanics, engineering sciences, heat and energy, mathematics, manufacturing and designs are the areas that are considered... to be the...
