Surrealism refers to a literary and artistic movement that started in the 1920s and emphasized on the expression of imaginations and dreams that are not in the conscious control in convention and reason (Aberth, 2010). It had an anti-rationalist sensibility and was shaped by new theories regarding peoples’ imagination and perceptions of reality. Surrealism aimed at revealing the unconscious and merging it with the rational life. It became popular mainly because it helped to bring the ridiculousness in art, which people wanted. It was also adopted because people believed that the subconscious mind relayed better images than the conscious mind (Aberth, 2010).
On the other hand, the pop art period, which existed between the 1050s and 1070s, was based on more realistic images and designs (Monem, 2007). It was also called popular art and mainly made use of the popular things in the society. It emerged due to the climate of turbulence, consumerism, and experimentation to discover new things. It mainly focused on or made use of popular people and items in the society to present its ideas. It mostly uses; comic books, movie celebrities, soup cans, and many other commercial items (Monem, 2007). It insisted on presentation of real items but with some imagination and creativity in terms of positioning, coloring, shape, and context. It moved images from their usual positions and contexts and created a new outlook of the whole surrounding. This art movement was mostly used in advertising, mass media, and movies. It was used to present irony and culture (Monem, 2007).
The surrealism and the pop art movements have some common characteristics. The first characteristic is the use of real world items.
