These were created from the Kings County. Flatbush was named so since primarily it comprised of woods and flat terrain. “vlak” which translates to “flat” was Anglicized and thus, the name became “Flatbush”. Flatbush was also known as Midwood in early 20th century (Kaplan and Kaplan 312).
Owing to the high number of African-Americans residing in Flatbush, there are a number of stereotypes that revolve around them. The most common is the thinking that most of the people there are criminals. Thus, a black person who pays with his credit card will have it thoroughly scrutinized before he is served by having his signature compared with that on the credit card. Although this may be termed as racial profiling, it still shows the stereotypes people harbor about the inhabitants of the area. This was not true as the area was calm and there have been no incidences of crime reported in the recent past.
As mentioned earlier, African Americans of non-Hispanic origin dominate the area. Nonetheless, it also comprises of people from different ethnic backgrounds such as Hispanic, Whites, and Asians. According to Zipskinny website, African Americans comprise about 75.85% of the total population. They are followed by Latino at 14%, then White at 3.2%, Asians at 2.7% and other groups who are below 1% (ZIPskinny 1). The high population of the African Americans in the area can be attributed to slave trade. The majority of Dutch immigrants had settled in Kings County, where they practiced slavery. During the Revolutionary War between 1775 and 1783, most of the African-Americans supported the British (Kaplan and Kaplan 328). They had been given promises of freedom and soon after the war, notable persons such as Earl of Dunmore, the then governor of Virginia.
