Download file to see previous pages Researches that were conducted by National Centre for Educational Research and the National Centre for Social and Criminal research in the United States of America in 2010 concluded that, over 70% of the interviewed students had enough exposure to corporal punishment in schools while more that 42% of the interviewed students have adequate exposure to corporal punishment at their homes. Researches by National Centre for Educational Research and the National Centre for Social and Criminal research further reviewed that, parents and teachers who received corporal punishment at their childhood age are more likely to use corporal punishment when disciplining their children (Skiba, Peterson, & Williams, 2012). Moreover, parents who believe corporal punishment is the only way of punishing their children do not blame teachers who use corporal punishment on their children.
Researchers have also found out that, school-based factors have a major role in alleviating corporal punishment in public schools. High level of frustration as well as poor school management forces teachers to be too strict or too lenient on some students’ thus triggering violence among students and in turn increasing the side of corporal punishment in public schools. Moreover, school administration inappropriate actions on students and caretakers disregards and complaints result to active conflict between teachers and parents (Simonsen, Sugai, & Negron, 2008).
To address the ever-increasing complaints on corporal punishment in United States of America public schools, school administrators should initiate regular interactions with parents and other involved stakeholders in order to come up with the most effective and fair means of disciplining and rewarding students (Putnam, Luiselli, Handler, & Jefferson, 2009).
