Interpersonal Intelligence Interpersonal Intelligence Interpersonal intelligence is one of the seven intelligences formulated by psychologist Howard Gardner. It is defined as the intelligence “concerned with the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people. It allows people to work effectively with others” (Smith, 2002, 2008). People with interpersonal intelligence have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills. They view situations in various perspectives. They are able to build positive relationships with other people; thus, they are very good at resolving conflicts among disagreeing groups (Cherry, n.d.). They easily empathize with other people, sensitive to their emotions and moods and understand them well. Social gatherings are greatly enjoyed by them. This explains why they have many friends and they like engaging in team sports (Personality Max, n.d.).
Cherry went on to say that because of these characteristics, people with a high interpersonal intelligence will be successful in the fields of psychology, philosophy, guidance counseling, sales or politics (n.d.). Most religious leaders, nurses, therapists, community organizers, teachers and mediators are people with interpersonal intelligence.
One can learn to develop his interpersonal intelligence by participating in community organizations, taking a leadership role in group activities, taking up a team sport or informally tutoring other people. Enhancing one’s listening and communication skills are also essential to develop interpersonal intelligence.
