With civilization, humans have leveraged on technology to enhance their communication and learning. It is no wonder Bray (2007) acknowledge that in the current century, Internet and mobile technology have transformed the interaction, working and learning among humans.
Just as other sectors of the economy have invested immensely in ICT in the modern world, the education sector has also invested in ICT in the recent years. Acknowledging this trend, the World Bank (2013) attributes this to the general ability of ICT to empower teachers and learners thus positively impacting on educational achievement.
ICT promotes communication and learning among students thus presenting immense benefits. First, ICT enhances international collaboration among students. Bray (2007) observes that ICT is the reason for a more social modern society. Student tutors easily mentor students from other countries, the same way students from different countries effectively share educational information leveraging on ICT capabilities as documented by UNESCO Institute for Statistics, UIS (2014). This practice enhances and diversifies the scope of learning. Furthermore, ICT makes learning materials more available. The World Bank Group (2013) refers to access of information as the main use of ICT with regards to education. Indeed, UIS (2014) affirms the availability of open source textbooks and even teacher guides on the Internet. This enables students to easily access the required learning resources. Finally, ICT supports learning objectives. One of such objectives includes the acquisition of up-to-date information that would make students resourceful in a practical work set-up. However, it is only in today’s age of massive information explosion that both students and teachers are mandated to understand and use the technology in order to enhance teaching and learning. Although students are constantly using technology in a social environment such as their use of cell phones or social networking using the technology to learn is a completely new element.
In the ancient times, communication was done by carving on stone pillars (History World, n.d.). However, this was a slow form of communication as it involved a lot of work for the recipient to have access to the message. Moreover, the use of carving was improved by use of papyrus (History World, n.d.).
One of these many usable changes is the advancement of Information and Communication Technology or ICT. ICT has been widely used in the world for purposes of education, work, social networking, and business. ICT’s tools and services are very useful and accessible to make people’s daily lives a lot more convenient.
With the advent of computers, the Internet, wireless communication devices and other innovations, technological advances have not only changed the way the world lives and works but also the way the world learns. Only a century ago, the average classroom was a functional place, featuring little more than a blackboard, desks and a few books.
According to Thomas McManus it, "combines media advantages of other media so that it conveys video and sound better than a book, is more interactive than a videotape and, unlike a CD-ROM, it can link people from around the world cheaply" (McManus, 1995). It has often been said and believed that the introduction of Information and Communication Technology in the field of education has improved the rate of student's achievement considerably. 8
According to an HMI report published in 1977, many comprehensive schools in a survey of eighty-three secondary schools 'restricted the modern language to perhaps 60-80 per cent of the pupils' (DES 1977:4). The report adds, 'By the fourth secondary year (age 14-15 years), a modern language was optional for the majority of pupils: in all types of school visited during the survey, only slightly more than a third of the pupils in this age group were still engaged in such studies' (ibid.: 8).
This term has greatly affected the learning of subject=based lessons. The overall impact is that schools are integrating ICT on a wider scale through blogs, installing LAN facility and setting email account of teachers. Teachers themselves are using databases to upload marks, using expert advice through emails and designing interactive quizzes and games.
