Amazingly, what you eat during the finals week is just as important as how much you revise, or even more. A common mistake is to survive on energy drinks, depriving your body, and most importantly brain, of necessary nutrients. Even thinking that you can sacrifice your long-term health preservation for a week just to pass the exams is wrong. Not only are junk food and energy drinks bad for you in general but they also have a negative effect on your exam performance. If you want your brain to live up to its true potential, here is what you should eat during the dreaded finals week.

Fruit and vegetables

All fitness considerations aside, fruit will be a good source of fructose to nourish your thinking wires. The best ones are bananas, apples and different kinds of berries.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter contains a load of proteins and healthy fats, which nourish your brain and can keep it going for a long time. Another plus is that it is rather affordable (unlike the majority of “healthy foods”) and easy to use (you can make yourself a sandwich in minutes).


Eggs will also be a good source of nutrients as they contain antioxidants and proteins. Having eggs for breakfast will keep your body and mind fueled for work, helping you avoid the embarrassment of rumbling tummy.


The fatter, the better. Fish fats are not like animal fats and can boost the work of your brain significantly. The best ones are mackerel, sardines and salmon. Add some whole-wheat bread and you’ll have a satisfying and energy-friendly meal.

And… coffee!

Unless you are a very busy person who sleeps 3 hours instead of 8, you don’t need more than 3 cups of coffee a day. Despite what is often said about its downsides, coffee can and will be good for you if you don’t overdose. It is sometimes even prescribed by doctors for blood pressure and gastro-intestinal problems. Again – don’t overdose and if possible add some milk to keep your calcium levels intact and protect your internal organs from irritation.

That’s it – these are the five foods that should be a good source of all nutrients and energy for both, your brain and body. And don’t forget to get some sleep - all the revising you did will have been in vain if you can’t get your brain to work at the exam.
