Download file to see previous pages Atoms link up to form molecules. These atoms might either be of the same element or of different elements. Depending on the characteristics of these atoms, molecular or ionic bonds are formed. The number of electrons present in each atom is what really determines the kind of bonds to be formed.
Electronegativity is the tendency that an atom has to attract electrons in a chemical bond. An ionic bond is formed when the elements involved have significantly different electronegativity. This means that the probability of ionic bonds being formed is higher when the difference between the electronegativity of the two elements is greater. It is also important to note that electrons are lost and gained by atoms in order to obtain a stable electron configuration.
The atom with lower electronegativity loses an electron to the one with higher electronegativity. The net charge of the atoms then becomes positive or negative due to the loss and gain of an electron respectively. The two atoms thus charged oppositely attract each other and this is an ionic bond formed.
Atoms are then interconnected through attraction throughout a substance. Substances whose atoms are bonded in this way are termed as ionic. These substances have common characteristics although they might differ slightly due to factors such as the strength of the bond formed.
Covalent bonds are formed when atoms share electrons forming molecules. Sharing of electrons depends on the orbitals among other properties. Quite a number of theories have been formulated to explain how covalent bonds are formed. Electrons are shared to obtain a stable electron configuration. Many molecules of this type then make up molecular substances.
Molecular substances generally occur as gases, liquids or solids with low melting points. This is because the intermolecular forces of attractions are relatively weak. The ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Online Instruction versus Face to Face Instruction
...with face to face instruction. In a face to face setup, students who are more comfortable of expressing their thoughts verbally are able to participate better during class discussions, thereby demonstrating that he or she is indeed familiar with the topics. Teachers may also be able to use a wider range of assessment techniques which may include collaboration among students in order to allow them to assist each other. These features, which are stripped off from online instruction, are vital in the learning process of students (Aragon, Johnson and Shaik). Along these lines, research has shown that online instruction clearly does not accommodate all learning styles (Smith,...

...? How To Change the Oil of Your Car How To Change the Oil of Your Car Introduction Frequently changing the engine oil of a car along with its oil filter keeps the car’s engine healthy and increases the life of the car. While the car is operational, the quality of engine oil keeps declining and contaminants become a part of the oil filter. Oil and oil filter change depends entirely on the driving behavior of the owner of the car. The process may be required within a matter of 3 months to two years or 3,000 miles or 20,000 miles (Torbjornsen, 2010, p.106). To change the oil of your car’s engine, you do not need to contact a mechanic all the time. The task can be done by the car owner and the task is quite inexpensive. Steps Step1... How To...

...of such a precept: “The maxims are, first, that the individual is not accountable to society for his actions, in so far as these concern the interests of no person but himself. Advice, instruction, persuasion, and avoidance by other people, if thought necessary by them for their own good, are the only measures by which society can justifiably express its dislike or disapprobation of his conduct. Secondly, that for such actions as are prejudicial to the interests of others, the individual is accountable, and may be subjected either to social or to legal punishments, if society is of opinion that the one or the other is requisite for its protection” (Mill 17). Instruction Groups
...Instructional Groups The placement into groups is an effective strategy in the teaching and learning process. This paper discusses situations in which whole group instruction, within-class grouping and flexible grouping can be combined within the classroom. Whole group instruction refers to the presentation of material to all the students at the same time. Students are not separated into different groups for instruction. The teaching method, resources, and time of delivery are the same for each student. Within-class grouping involves the categorization of students into groups based on their ability or performance level. Thus, the teacher may have a number of high achievers in one group and low achievers in another. Students enter... ...
