Management consultancy is defined as “an advisory service contracted for and provided to organizations by specially trained and qualified persons who assist, in an objective and independent manner, the client organization to identify management problems, analyze such problems, recommend solutions to these problems, and help, when requested, in the implementation of solutions” (Greiner and Metzger, 1983, p. 7). As such, management consultants play a crucial role in assuming an objective stance at evaluating the concerns of the client; while ensuring that the most viable course of action is recommended to serve the best interests of diverse stakeholders.
The complexity of management consultants role has been emphasized by Kubr (2002) who asserted that “the main consulting duties lie in developing the manager and others who contribute to managing the enterprise at the same time as being expected to provide feasible practical solutions to a wide range of specific problems, for example, in finance, sales, production and purchasing” (pp. 551-552). The widely encompassing functions, in conjunction with the need to focus on one or multi-faceted issues, contribute to the challenging role. Likewise, management consultants are expected to be directly involved in tasks from investigation of the problem to monitoring the implementation of recommended courses of action (Exponential Training & Assessment Ltd., 2010).
