The CEO holds a critical position in the firm. The primary function is to ensure that the organization keeps running as planned, by holding the entire organizational team responsible for their respective duties. For the CEO, information needs to flow from the top to the bottom and vice versa. The primary need here is to communicate with the entire organizational team. This can encompass both formal and informal communication. Consequently, the communication is expected to yield results. These results are in most cases realized in terms of operationalized policies or activities that influence the operations of the firm in one way or another (Jones, Watson, Gardner & Gallois, 2004). The highlighted information needs serve both the functions and roles of the CEO in the bid to ensure that every aspect of the firms is in order.
The chairman of the board oversees the functions of the organization’s overhead committee. The flow of information from the chairman spreads to the entire firm through the CEO and his/her team. The information need in this case is to harmonize what gets in and out of the organization, subject to the functions and roles of the chairman. The information flow from the chairman of the board is as important as the information that flows from other parties to the chairman. The input is the contribution of all parties that work directly with the chairman, and the output is what is communicated as critical evaluation of the matter at hand. In the context of chairmanship roles, chairman-shareholder interaction on communication basis is characteristic of the underlying information flow between these two parties.
