This paper aims to will highlight the profile of two children from Offits book to assess various factors.
The argument: Regardless of the fact, that the working and wage earning street children who work from dawn to dusk, make 50% of the total population of children of Guatemala city, the government, people, NGO’s, and international agencies have failed to pay attention towards them. As according to Offit, “Rey (one of the street child labor) does not fit the popular concept of street child, and he’s not in a gang. He is a member of the working poor” (Offit 2).
As the author has stated in the book that street children are found everywhere in the world, so they are on the streets of Guatemala City. The author has elaborated the story of Rey, fifteen years old, which is a street child labor and polishes shoes to earn his living. He sits underneath an underpass where no one notices him. He also sells newspaper for an old man other than polishing shoes. Offit has emphasized on the fact that it is not necessary that street children have to be gang members to get attentions of the society. Those who work to earn their livelihood should also be focused on by the society as they also need their help (Offit).
Another case the author has discussed is of Velásquez. Velásquez is also a street child laborer like Rey, who wakes up early in the morning and goes in the street to earn his bread. He wakes up as early as 4:30 in the morning (Offit 43). Velásquez make Q30 to Q40 per day (usually on Sunday and Tuesday) and try to work for as many vendors as he can, on the streets when he is not working for his boss, Dona Yoli (Offit 45).
It is kind of ironic, how the people of the society ignore Rey and Velásquez on the busiest streets of Guatemala. The society has been easily inter-sectionalised and these innocent street child laborers are destined to make these unfortunate wage earning decisions as they family commitments and have to
